Mandatory Applications Sets

One thing that’s just downright awesome about MDT 2012 is the ability to set certain applications as “mandatory”. As one would suspect, mandatory means just that, the application install at deploy time is not up for debate. This way you can never forget to grab the antivirus or vpn whatever, and even if the local IT staff at a branch office think they’re clever, they’ll get it too when using MDT. Coolest of all is one can have rules that apply to everyone in default, and then have another set that applies for just laptops or desktops. This way you’ll never forget VPN on laptops ever again, just pull the GUID from the Application in the deployment workbench and use the following in your customsettings file.
[Settings]
Priority=ByLaptopType, ByDesktopType, Default

[ByLaptopType]
Subsection=Laptop-%IsLaptop%

[ByDesktopType]
Subsection=Desktop-%IsDesktop%

[Desktop-True]
MandatoryApplications001={XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXX}

[Laptop-True]
MandatoryApplications001={XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXX}

[Default
MandatoryApplications001={XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXX}
